Marian Novak founded the Responsible Hospitality Coalition (RHC) of San Diego County in 1991. It became a model for other similar programs around the country. The RHC serves as a coalition of diverse perspectives promoting policy development, responsible beverage sales and service, prevention programs, and research. The goal is to reduce problems associated with alcohol and other drugs in the commercial environment.
Ms. Novak is a certified instructor for several responsible beverage service (RBS) programs, and trains more than 3000 volunteers at community events every year. She serves on the RBS advisory board for the California State Alcoholic Beverage Control, working to establish responsible beverage standards for the State. She works closely with colleges to design programming to reduce DUI’s and high risk drinking. In 1996 by the RHC and has been a valuable tool to recognize problem businesses to intervene with training and policies.
As a waitress, Ms. Novak worked her way through college. It became clear to her then, there was a need for stronger alcohol policies related to over service, underage access and drinking and driving. Her life’s passion has been working closely with the hospitality industry to promote and design RBS programs that will reduce alcohol-related problems in our communities while maintaining thriving and profitable businesses
